Some designers seem to forget that many mothers of the bride or groom are now only in their forties and don’t want to dress like someone’s granny! Many of the styles coming in for next year have either three quarter length or full length jackets over a dress and look really fabulous – very Carole Middleton! There are some gorgeous prints with plain jackets, lots of lace overlays and silver grey, purple, turquoise and navy seem to be the colours to watch out for.

Taffeta fabric is making a comeback and has a lovely sheen which reflects the light giving the impression of shaded fabric. Gorgeous lace overlays, particularly the corded lace look. Very expensive, but you don’t have to spend a fortune to look good. Complete your outfit with a fabulous hat – the bigger the better – and see what an impression you make.
Don’t worry about matching the colour of your hat or fascinator with your other accessories, as it is quite acceptable to have shoes and bag to match in an accent colour, with your hat or fascinator in the same colour as your outfit. Be careful of falling into the habit of carrying a large handbag – think about what you really need to carry with you. You won’t need money (let your partner do the honours), do you really need your mobile with you (everyone you may need to speak to will be at the wedding), but do take your tissues as you’ll definitely need those!
